K-pop stars donate to help victims of deadly Hong Kong fire
K-pop stars are donating money to help victims of a deadly apartment fire in Hong Kong that killed at least 128 people, one of the city's worst blazes.
Girl group aespa said on their official Weibo account that they will give 500,000 Hong Kong dollars to the Hong Kong Red Cross, saying they were heartbroken by the news. Stray Kids pledged 1 million Hong Kong dollars through World Vision Hong Kong to provide temporary housing and other support for affected children and residents.
SM and JYP Entertainment, two of South Korea's biggest entertainment companies, donated a combined 3 million Hong Kong dollars for emergency relief and recovery. Other groups, including boy bands Riize, EXO-CBX and KickFlip, also promised 100,000 Hong Kong dollars through World Vision Hong Kong.
The fire has also put pressure on organizers of the MAMA AWARDS, a K-pop show in Hong Kong. Some users in South Korea criticized them for not canceling the event.
South Korean company CJ E&M, which runs the awards, canceled both days’ red carpet events but said the ceremony will go ahead. It said it will add a “Support Hong Kong” message, include time for mourning and donate 20 million Hong Kong dollars to a support fund, saying it believes music can help with healing and solidarity.
