Orphan baby macaque starts leaving his plush toy behind
Punch, a baby orphan macaque, is outgrowing an orangutan plush toy that comforted him after his mother and other monkeys did not accept him at a zoo near Tokyo.
Photos of Punch dragging and hugging the toy spread online last month. The zoo asks visitors to stay quiet and limits viewing to 10 minutes to reduce stress for the more than 50 other monkeys.
Recently, Punch has used the toy less. He climbed onto another monkey’s back, sat with adults, and was sometimes groomed or hugged. Kosuke Kano, a zookeeper, said keepers must help Punch learn how monkeys live together and be accepted. Zoo director Shigekazu Mizushina said it is good if Punch becomes independent. Punch still sleeps with the toy every night, but keepers hope he will soon sleep in a group with other monkeys.
