Libraries to help train AI with old books
Tech companies are now training AI using more than the internet. They are turning to libraries with very old books. Harvard University will release one million books to researchers. The books are in 254 languages. Some are from the 15th century.
This change comes as tech firms face legal problems. They used copyrighted books and art without permission. Old books are in the public domain and cause fewer legal issues. Microsoft’s legal expert said history offers useful cultural information. Most AI tools still depend on new online content. Some developers now use AI-made data.
This is because real training data may run out.
With help from Microsoft and OpenAI, Harvard is helping global libraries prepare their books. Their goal is to prepare collections for AI training. They also want local communities to benefit, not just companies.
