Michael Bloomberg was ranked No. 1 again on the Philanthropy 50, a ranking of major donors, after donating $4.3 billion to charity in 2025. It was the third year in a row that Bloomberg, the founder of Bloomberg, held the top position. His donations supported the arts, education, the environment, public health, and programs aimed at improving city governments.

Meanwhile, three other major donors each contributed at least $1 billion in 2025. Bill Gates donated $3.7 billion to the Gates Foundation. Paul Allen, a former Microsoft colleague of Gates, left a $3.1 billion bequest to establish a foundation focused on science and technology. Warren Buffett donated $1.3 billion to four family foundations.

Overall, the Philanthropy 50 donors gave a total of $22.4 billion in 2025, with a median gift of $105 million. Technology donors contributed the largest total amount, reaching $10 billion, while donors from the finance sector made up the largest group. In addition, New York and California had more donors than any other states, and nonprofits in those states received the highest amount of funding.

However, the report also noted that only 19 people from the Forbes 400, a list of the richest Americans, gave enough to appear in the 2026 ranking. MacKenzie Scott was not included, although she has donated about $26 billion to charities since 2020. The report suggested that she may have given enough to qualify, but neither she nor her representatives provided detailed information.
