Uganda brings rhinos back to Kidepo Valley National Park
Ugandan wildlife workers brought rhinos back to Kidepo Valley National Park, a protected area in northeastern Uganda. This is important because there were no rhinos there after 1983. They disappeared because many were killed by poachers.
On March 17, 2026, two southern white rhinos arrived from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in central Uganda, a place where people protect and raise rhinos. Two more arrived on March 19, 2026.
Ziwa has been raising rhinos since 2005. Officials and wildlife protection groups worked together to move the animals more than 400 kilometers to a new protected area inside the park. The new area has fences, roads, and systems to prevent fires. More rhinos are expected to move there later in 2026, and some may come from Kenya.
Poaching is still a problem in Uganda. Rhinos are often killed for their horns. These horns are sold in illegal markets in Asia at very high prices.
