Why some workers use AI and others do not

More American workers are trying artificial intelligence, or AI, in their jobs, but many still do not feel comfortable using it. A Gallup poll, a public opinion survey by the research company Gallup, shows a clear split. Some employees see it as a powerful tool, while others focus on its possible dangers.

Some workers comment AI is a “gamechanger” that helps them work faster and more efficiently. They report that AI tools can improve productivity, especially when used regularly in their daily tasks. However, other workers are worried that new technologies, including AI, could replace their jobs in the future.

Social worker Scott Segal uses AI to find information that helps connect his elderly and vulnerable patients with health care resources, but he also thinks AI could soon replace his role. Lawyer Elizabeth Bloch uses ChatGPT to help draft polite letters and emails, yet she avoids AI for legal research because it can sometimes include false information that could cause serious problems in court.

About 18% of U.S. workers say it is “very” or “somewhat” likely that their current job will be taken within the next five years because of new technology, automation, robots or AI. People working at companies that have adopted AI are even more likely to be concerned that their job will be taken, 23% call this at least “somewhat” likely in the next few years.
