Only nine artisans still weave Ecuador’s traditional horsehair sieves
In Guangopolo, a village east of Ecuador's capital, only nine artisans still make a traditional sieve called a "cedazo." They weave fine mesh from a horse's tail. "We are the last generation making these sieves," said Guido Paucar, the only man among them.
People in Guangopolo have made sieves for 200 years. Long ago, they used them in the kitchen to sift flour. About 50 years ago, around 500 families sold up to 600 sieves a month. But cheap plastic sieves arrived, and now they sell only about 10 each week.
Today, horsehair is also hard to find and expensive, because farmers use motorcycles and tractors, not horses. Leonor Cuje, 57, learned to weave from her mother as a child. But today, classes for young people have not worked. "Now they are professionals and they don't want to do this anymore," she explained.
