Ancient structure found near Stonehenge
Archaeologists in the United Kingdom found an ancient structure near Stonehenge. Stonehenge is a stone circle in England. Researchers think the structure was an early model for Stonehenge.
The structure had two wooden poles 120 meters apart. Like Stonehenge, the poles were lined up with the summer solstice sunrise and the winter solstice sunset. Researchers believe the structure is about 500 years older than Stonehenge. The stone circle was built about 4,500 years ago.
Archaeologist Phil Harding said the place was likely used for large religious events. His team also found several interesting objects there. He added that a discovery like this may happen only once in a person's life.
The discovery was announced before the summer solstice on June 22, 2026. Every year, thousands of people visit Stonehenge to celebrate the longest day of the year. Harding said people on a nearby hillside also watched the sunrise on the longest day of the year about 5,000 years ago.
