Fighters from 30 countries met in northern Denmark to take part in a modern sport based on medieval battle. Competitors wear armor and fight with copies of 14th-century weapons, such as swords, axes, and shields. However, it is a real combat sport with safety rules, not just a show.

The International Medieval Combat Federation, the group in charge, held its yearly world championship near Spøttrup Castle, built around 1520. The competition was first held in Spain in 2014. In 2026, the four-day event opened on July 23, and nearly 600 people joined.

A spokesperson, Kamila Studencka, said the activity combines modern and historical techniques. She described it as something between full combat sports and fencing. Fighters compete in one-on-one matches and in bigger team battles called Buhurt. Men and women compete separately.

The organization explains that safety is carefully controlled. Fighters wear thick, protective clothing under their armor, and trained officials make sure that everyone follows the rules. It also notes that the injury rate is about the same as in other martial arts.

The sport is growing in popularity worldwide. Alex King, an American competitor, said short videos have helped attract more people. More women are also taking part, and Miisa Kaivos, a female fighter from Finland, added, "It's amazing to see."
