Prague Zoo gives animals ice to cool down in a heat wave
The Prague Zoo, in the Czech Republic, gave its animals lots of ice on July 30, 2026. A strong heat wave hit Europe, and the ice helped them stay cool. Two polar bears, Aleut and Gregor, quickly rolled in the ice. The day was hot, about 38 degrees Celsius, but they looked happy.
The zoo first gave ice to animals in 2024. Climate change was bringing more very hot days. The polar bears were born in Germany in 2010. They are used to Europe's weather, but they enjoyed the ice the most. Other animals also cooled down with ice. In the past, otters, elephants, and parrots got ice too.
"The weather keeps surprising us," said Filip Mašek, a zoo worker. The hot weather came early in 2026, and on June 28, the country had its hottest day ever. So the zoo will get the ice ready sooner in 2027.
