AI experiment at a German opera festival draws boos
An experiment with AI took place at a famous opera festival in Germany. The event, the yearly Richard Wagner festival, is held in the town of Bayreuth. The festival is named after a famous German composer.
At the end of the opera on August 1, 2026, Marcus Lobbes and his team walked onto the stage. He was the leader of the AI project. The crowd booed them. However, the singers and musicians received warm applause, especially the conductor, Christian Thielemann.
Before the performance, the festival organizers made an announcement. According to them, AI would appear on stage for the first time at the event. They explained that the technology would not play a character but would create images instead. During the opera, pictures appeared, changed, and mixed together. The singers stayed at the center, while the images moved around them.
The AI displayed scenes from past performances and images from history. Lobbes and his team had chosen these pictures in advance. However, the unusual mix of visuals confused many people in the audience.
The festival website said that each performance will be unique because the images never stay the same. Two more shows are scheduled.
