Pacific country Nauru changes its name to Naoero
Nauru is a very small island country in the Pacific Ocean. It now has a new name, the Republic of Naoero.
Nauru's president, David Adeang, said the new name matches the spelling and sound of the country's own language. In the past, this name was hard for people in other countries to say, so they used the name Nauru instead. Now the country has started using its traditional name again.
Some other things will change, too. The nation's people will have a new name: dei-Naoero, not Nauruan. The international code will also change from NRU to NRO. This code helps identify the nation.
Adeang first requested the change in January 2026. After that, the country's parliament voted for the new name. Today, the United Nations, a group of many countries, uses the name Naoero on its website. Some governments use the new name, too.
