American kids learn to ride bicycles in gym class
For many years, kids learned to ride a bicycle at home, on sidewalks or in the street. Now, many are learning at school.
In September 2026, young students at a school in California put on helmets. Then they got on special bikes with no pedals. These are called balance bikes. The children pushed with their feet and practiced gliding. Adults watched and helped them.
A program called All Kids Bike has brought riding lessons to almost 2,000 schools in the United States. It makes bicycle riding part of gym class. Some children have no adult or older brother or sister to teach them, so this program helps them learn.
First, the students use bikes with no pedals. Later, adults add pedals, and the kids begin to ride. The lessons give children confidence and freedom. The program leader says bicycle riding is a life skill, like swimming.
