Egypt builds its own wind turbines to grow a renewable-energy industry
Egypt hopes that making wind turbines at home will help it build a renewable-energy industry and set an example for the rest of Africa. The country has signed an agreement with SANY Renewable Energy, a Chinese company, to develop a 2,000-megawatt wind project, along with Egypt's first turbine factory. The plant should supply Egypt and, possibly, export equipment across Africa and the Middle East.
Energy experts say Egypt's focus on scale, local manufacturing, and technology transfer could teach other African countries how to turn their plans into working infrastructure. They point to Nigeria, where a small 10-megawatt wind farm took nearly two decades to begin producing electricity, finally doing so in September 2025.
Fadhel Kaboub, an economics professor in the United States, said African markets are often too small for local industry to succeed, so countries should cooperate rather than industrialize alone. He warned, however, that Egypt must make sure its Chinese partner truly shares the technology, or the deal could create a new form of dependence.
Dr. Dola Oluteye, an energy-policy researcher, argued that the real barrier is the cost of borrowing money. According to the International Energy Agency, the cost of financing these projects in Africa is two to three times higher than in advanced economies and China. Oluteye added that Egypt is trying to buy the ability to make turbines, while Nigeria only purchased the machines themselves.
