Truck driver’s giant model of New York City goes on display at museum
Joe Macken is a truck driver from New York City. For more than 20 years, he built a giant model of the city. He used balsa wood and foam board. His daughter asked him to post videos on TikTok, a well-known short-clip sharing app. The videos quickly became popular online.
Now the model is on display at the Museum of the City of New York. The museum saw his videos and contacted him. The exhibit, called "He Built This City," opened in February 2026 and continues until Oct. 12, 2026.
The model has more than 800,000 small structures, including buildings and monuments such as the Statue of Liberty. Macken said he never planned to complete the model because he enjoyed building it so much.
Visitors come to find old neighborhoods and remember family history. Macken hopes to show the model in other places and add more than 50 new buildings.
