A rescue center helps baby raccoons learn to live in the wild

An animal rescue center in Pass Christian, a small city in the southern U.S. state of Mississippi, helps baby raccoons learn to live in the wild. Normally, they learn this from their mothers. But many of the young raccoons lost their mothers because of storms, traffic accidents, or other problems.

A woman named Woodside started the center in 2019. So far in 2026, it has cared for 76 baby raccoons. She and the director, Raquel Priest, teach the animals useful skills. They show the babies how to find food, swim, and climb trees.

The two women also make a sound like a raccoon's danger call. When the babies hear it, they quickly run up the trees. Learning to swim is important too because hurricanes often hit this part of Mississippi.

About six months after their rescue, the raccoons are ready to live on their own. The center then holds a graduation ceremony for them.
