Caribbean and Bermudian words join the Oxford English Dictionary
More than a dozen words from Bermuda and the Caribbean were added to the Oxford English Dictionary on September 23, 2026. Bermuda is a small island in the north Atlantic, and the Caribbean is a region of many islands. Several of the new entries come from Bermuda.
Some of the terms are about everyday life. "Bimpert" and "shadeesh" both come from Bermuda. "Bimpert" means a stupid or foolish person, but no one is sure how the word began. "Shadeesh" is the name for chorizo, a type of sausage. Others are names for food, such as "sugar cake," made from coconut cooked with sugar, water and spices, and "peanut punch," a rich, creamy drink made with peanuts or peanut butter, milk, sugar and spices.
Words for people and relationships also appear in the list. "Nana" and "nani" come from Hindi and are used to talk about grandparents on the mother's side, while "hamma" is a Bermudian word for a friend. "Trinbagonian" is another entry, and it means people from Trinidad and Tobago, a Caribbean country of two islands.
Sherwin Williams, a construction worker in Trinidad, said the change would help people around the world understand the origin of these words. "People recognize us by our slang," he said. The dictionary now has about 500,000 words and phrases, and some of them date back to the 11th century.
