Doctors warn that energy drinks can harm children
Doctors have warned for years that energy drinks can be dangerous for children. They often contain a lot of caffeine. Too much of it can cause a fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, sleep problems, and other serious effects. In 2026, a new group of doctors repeated this warning.
Depending on the product, the caffeine content of an energy drink can range from 80 to 300 milligrams per serving. A normal cup of coffee has about 80 to 100 milligrams. The American Academy of Pediatrics, a group of children’s doctors, says that those aged 12 to 18 should have no more than 100 milligrams a day. Younger ones are advised not to have any caffeine. It also says that young people should avoid energy drinks, though the industry calls them safe.
Still, many drink them. According to a survey by the University of Michigan, 23% of final-year high school students said they consume energy drinks every day. Doctors explain that caffeine speeds up the heartbeat and puts stress on the body. Even healthy children, including young athletes, can become seriously ill.
Teachers and coaches can explain the difference between energy drinks and sports drinks, which help replace the water and salts people lose during exercise. Adults can also set a good example by not drinking energy drinks in front of kids.
