A Greek island school has only two students
Chryssa Ntalaka is the only teacher at the last school on Kalamos, a small island in Greece. Every year, she has fewer and fewer students. In 2026, there are only two, and they are in sixth grade. In 2027, these two students will go to middle school on the mainland. Then her school will have to close. The island’s kindergarten also closed in 2023.
Kalamos is a quiet island with only 80 people. Around 2016, there were about 40 children on the island. Since then, the number has fallen a lot. Seven teenagers take a boat to school on the mainland every day. On windy days, the sea is dangerous, so they have to miss class.
Ntalaka wants two families with children to move there. Then the school can remain open. She and the town have tried hard to find new families, but no one has come yet.
