A Kenyan school, a new model for education in Africa
Rare Gem Talent School in Kenya helps students who have dyslexia. Dyslexia is a learning difference that mainly affects reading and writing. In many Kenyan schools, teachers do not know how to support these learners, so they often feel sad and left behind. At Rare Gem, teachers use a multi-sensory method using their eyes, ears, hands, to teach reading and writing.
For example, students use colors for different sounds, sing songs to remember spelling, and touch objects to build words. Teachers explain step by step and wait patiently until each learner understands. The school uses the normal Kenyan curriculum that follows the national study plan but makes small changes so that dyslexic students can keep up with lessons more easily.
Rare Gem started in 2012 with fewer than 10 students. Today, it has about 210 students with dyslexia and other needs such as autism, which can change how people communicate, feel things and behave. Some former students now work as teachers and mentors at the school. They show children that people with dyslexia can succeed.
In Kenya, many more children with special needs are still not in school. Rare Gem gives one example of how African schools can include these learners better, without completely changing the whole education system.
