Australian aircraft makes rare midwinter rescue in Antarctica
An Australian air crew made a rare winter rescue in Antarctica. They flew an American patient to a hospital in Christchurch, New Zealand. The mission was carried out in response to an urgent request for help.
The aircraft belongs to Skytraders, an Australian company that operates Antarctic flights. On July 31, 2026, it flew from the Australian city of Hobart to the U.S. McMurdo Station. McMurdo is a research base in Antarctica. The plane landed near the base after a flight of five and a half hours. It arrived in total darkness, and the temperature fell to minus 43 degrees Celsius.
The American was flown to Christchurch the same day as the weather was getting worse. Officials said the patient was admitted to the hospital in serious condition and later continued to receive medical treatment there.
The copilot, Louise Robertson, said the extreme cold and darkness pushed the aircraft close to its limit. A plan to fly a day earlier, on July 30, was stopped by a snowstorm. Robertson explained that the crew had only a short time to reach the base.
"To get there in complete darkness in these extreme cold temperatures is very, very rare," Robertson added. "I believe it hasn't been done before."
