Chimpanzees get health checks and a second chance in Liberia
A group of chimpanzees now has a new home. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, scientists used these animals in experiments to test a vaccine. Many of these animals were caught in the wild when they were babies.
The Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge is a safe home for animals. It is in central Liberia, a country in West Africa. Its small islands are covered with mangrove trees. Today the chimpanzees live there. An animal rescue group takes care of them.
The animals received full health checks to stay healthy. Vets, or animal doctors, cleaned their teeth and took X-rays. They also checked the chimpanzees' hearts and lungs, and did blood tests. The animals got vaccines and nail trims too.
Their average age is now between 30 and 35. The rescue group hopes to give them a second chance at a normal life.
