Hawaii volcano breaks record

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano has broken a new record. Since December 2024, it has produced 48 lava fountaining episodes. This is more than any other eruption in Kilauea's history.

An expert at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the record happened on June 1, 2026. Between episodes, little or no lava comes out of the ground. But because the lava comes from the same vents, it is still one eruption.

One important thing about this eruption is that it is easy for people to watch. They are going to the area to see the lava fountains. An eruption in the 1980s had 47 episodes, but it happened in a more remote area.

However, the lava fountains can also send ash and rock into nearby towns. This can be dangerous for people who live there.

Kilauea is on Hawaii's Big Island. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
