International Women’s Day events highlight calls for equality
March 8th is the International Women’s Day and events across the world showed people’s hope for equality. International Women’s Day was celebrated with events and parades in many countries. Women asked for fair pay, education, and more chances to have important jobs. Some groups also celebrated how women’s rights have grown.
The United Nations made the day official back in 1977. People around the world celebrate it in different ways. Some protests are political and sometimes become tense. The movement began as women tried to make their working lives better and improve their social status.
2026 is the 115th year of International Women’s Day. The theme of the day was “Give to Gain.” It asked people to help groups that support women, to share skills with others, and to fight unfair treatment. Women in Istanbul, Turkey, shouted messages for equal rights. In China and Russia, people sold flowers in pink paper. In Phnom Penh, Cambodia, local workers raised their hands and umbrellas to show their support for women.
International Women’s Day is both a celebration and a time to take action for the rights of women. Activities include marches and charities. It is a public holiday in more than 20 countries such as Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Ukraine, Russia, and Cuba. In the United States, March is called Women’s History Month.
