Oregon lawmakers approve money to buy Abiqua Falls
Oregon may soon buy Abiqua Falls, a waterfall that was recently put up for sale on Redfin, a real estate website in the United States. The 28-meter waterfall has been privately owned for more than 100 years, but the public has been allowed to visit it. Its owner, the Abbey Foundation of Oregon, put the site up for sale in early 2026. The foundation is a nonprofit group that supports Mount Angel Abbey, a Catholic monastery in Oregon.
The sale worried many people who care about the falls. Near the end of the legislative session, a group of lawmakers from both Democrats and Republicans approved $2.1 million to buy the waterfall and the land around it. Travis Williams, president of the Willamette River Preservation Trust, said the public was confused and feared the site could be closed.
Abiqua Falls is about 50 kilometers east of Salem and about 80 kilometers south of Portland. It can be reached only by a rough road and a short but steep hike. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department still needs to check environmental and cultural or historical information before the purchase can continue. The land may not become a state park. It could instead be managed by a local government, a tribal group, or another state agency. Some people welcomed the plan, while others worried about fees and more visitors.
