World’s oldest tortoise is alive after false death report
Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal, is still alive on St. Helena, an island in the South Atlantic. Anne Dillon, head of communications on the island, said “he is very much alive.”
False reports of the 193-year-old tortoise’s death spread quickly on social media on April 1, 2026. A fake X account said Jonathan had died. Many people believed the post and shared messages of sadness.
But on April 2, 2026, an island official said the report was false and confirmed that Jonathan was still alive. An animal doctor who took care of Jonathan also said he did not have an X account. He wrote that the person behind the false post was asking people for crypto donations.
Guinness World Records lists Jonathan as the oldest living land animal and the oldest tortoise ever. He was believed to be about 50 years old when he was brought to St. Helena in 1882.
