Scientists test shark-resistant wetsuits

Australian scientists tested bite-resistant wetsuits and found they can help keep swimmers safer from sharks. Fatal shark attacks are very rare, with fewer than 50 unprovoked bites worldwide in 2024. However, more sightings of large sharks have made people look for extra protection.

Researchers at Flinders University in South Australia tested four materials — Aqua Armour, Shark Stop, ActionTX-S, and Brewster — by letting white and tiger sharks bite samples dragged behind boats. They found all materials reduced serious injuries compared to standard wetsuits. While bites can still cause internal damage, the materials can lower the risk of severe bleeding or tissue loss.

These new bite-resistant wetsuits are flexible for surfing and diving. Scientists hope the research helps people make safer choices in areas where large sharks live.
