A robot is helping a couple with disabilities live more independently
Brenda and Brian Marquis, a couple in New Hampshire, rely on a robot called Robbie to help them manage daily life. Brian, 59, has been living with a traumatic brain injury and dementia since a car accident in 2012, and Brenda uses a motorized wheelchair. Robbie, officially called Stretch 4, reminds Brian to eat, drink water, take medicine, and exercise. It can also read prescription labels and detect who is in the room using cameras and sensors. The robot was developed by a University of New Hampshire robotics laboratory with funding from the National Institute on Aging. Researcher Momotaz Begum said the goal is to reduce the burden on caregivers, who do much more than provide companionship. While the robot does not look particularly appealing, she said appearance is less important than function. The robot costs nearly $30,000 and is not yet widely available. However, for families like the Marquis couple, it offers greater independence and peace of mind.
