Honda Prelude vs. Toyota GR86: comparing two sports coupes
The Honda Prelude, a sports coupe, returned as the 2026 model after 26 years away. It comes with several performance features: a hybrid powertrain, a specialized suspension, and a braking system designed to improve stopping power. The new Prelude now competes with the Toyota GR86, a rear-wheel-drive coupe known for its manual transmission and low price. Edmunds, an automotive website, tested and compared both cars.
On the track, the GR86 wins. With a manual transmission, it reached 97 km/h in 6.0 seconds, helped by its 228-horsepower engine. An automatic version is about a second slower. The Prelude's 200-horsepower hybrid system needed 7.2 seconds to reach the same speed. Both models have excellent steering and balance, but the GR86's rear-wheel-drive layout gives it more character than the Prelude's front-wheel-drive design.
In daily use, the Prelude leads. Edmunds' testers praised its comfortable cabin, quality materials and a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone connections. The GR86's interior feels noisier and more old-fashioned. The Prelude also has a much bigger trunk than the GR86's. Its fuel efficiency is about 18.7 kilometers per liter, an estimate from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, compared with 9.4 to 10.2 kilometers per liter for the GR86.
Price favors the GR86, which starts at $32,795, nearly $10,000 less than the Prelude's $43,595. Even so, Edmunds ranked the Prelude higher overall for its comfort, fuel economy and daily usefulness, while still recommending the GR86 to drivers who enjoy a sportier drive.
