Scientists create a dog that may cause fewer allergies

Matt Walker loves dogs. But for many years, he could not touch one. Every time he did, he started to sneeze. His eyes became itchy, and his skin hurt.

Walker is a scientist. He and other scientists created a new kind of dog and called her Bailey. Before Bailey was born, they changed a small part of her genetic information. Because of this change, Bailey's hair and saliva do not have a special protein. This protein usually causes dog allergies.

These days, Walker plays with Bailey in the park. He gives her peanut butter, and she sits on his lap. Bailey does not make him sneeze anymore. His allergies did not go away, but Bailey is not like other dogs.

"It feels just amazing to get to have a dog," Walker said. Bailey now lives with him in New York, and she is a member of his family.
