90,000 rubber ducks race down the Chicago River for charity
On August 6, 2026, a truck dropped 90,000 rubber ducks into the Chicago River. The yellow ducks then floated down the river in the yearly Chicago Ducky Derby. This event raises money for charity every year.
The derby helps Special Olympics Illinois. This group holds sports competitions for people with disabilities and special needs across the state.
People can sponsor a duck to help the group with its competitions. One duck costs $10 and pays for an athlete's lunch. Six ducks cost $30 and pay for a team's gold medals. In total, the event raised more than $480,000.
The ducks floated for about 15 minutes. After the race, the sponsor of the fastest duck won a car, and the sponsor of the second-fastest duck won $2,500. Becky Cavanagh, a Special Olympics athlete, held up the winning duck. She said her favorite part of the sports competitions was "making new friends."
