Hong Kong now allows dogs in restaurants

Hong Kong has changed an old rule about dogs. Since 1994, only guide dogs could enter restaurants. Now dog owners can bring their pets to more than 900 restaurants. The new rule started on July 9, 2026.

The change is part of a bigger plan to make Hong Kong more pet-friendly. Dogs can already ride on some ferries and trains, and hospitals let them visit patients too. More than 240,000 families in the city keep pet dogs or cats.

Kelvin Chan owns a café that now welcomes dogs inside. Before, dogs could only stay outside, and the hot, humid summer was hard for them. "It could become part of our lives," he said.

Under the new rule, a dog's leash must not be longer than 1.5 meters (5 feet). The dogs should also be kept off tables and cannot eat from people's plates, and dangerous breeds are not allowed at all. Some restaurant owners hope for more customers.
