Le Butter Shop opened in July 2026 near the Eiffel Tower. It is described as the first store in Paris devoted only to butter. It sells 30 kinds of butter from small family producers in Brittany, the Loire Valley and northern France, three regions known for dairy farming.

The French eat about 8 kilograms of butter per person yearly, the government says. This is one of the highest levels in the world. Still, France's obesity rate is only 14%. That is well below the 19% average for wealthy nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Shop owner Erwan Leo compared tasting butter to tasting wine. Customers try a spoonful before buying. They can buy as little as 10 grams or as much as one kilogram. Flavors include seaweed, raspberry and chocolate. "Most people don't expect to like a raspberry butter or to like chocolate butter," Leo added. "And when they try it, this is where they're just like, 'Oh wow, OK.'"

News about the shop has spread online, which has brought visitors from abroad. Two visitors from Dublin, Ireland, had seen videos of the shop before flying to France just to taste the butter. Leo explained the secret to enjoying fatty butter is walking a lot and practicing moderation: "We don't go beyond four tartines a day," he said, referring to a French open-faced sandwich.
