Pediatricians say recess is important for all students
Recess is not just a fun break at school. The American Academy of Pediatrics, a group of pediatricians, says it is important for children’s health and school success at every age. On May 11, 2026, the group published new guidance, which was the first update in 13 years. The policy states that recess needs to be protected because schools have reduced break time while children’s health problems have increased.
Dr. Robert Murray, one of the lead writers of the policy, said free play gives children many important benefits. Breaks between focused study periods help children’s brains keep information better. Recess also gives students a chance to build confidence and learn how to get along with others. The group added that these benefits are important for both younger and older students.
The policy also says physical activity can help prevent obesity, a problem that affects about 1 in 5 children and teenagers in the United States. Because of these benefits, the group says schools should protect recess and should not take it away as punishment or for extra schoolwork. Today, recess time is not the same at all U.S. schools, and older students often get less break time than younger students. Studies show that children should have at least 20 minutes of recess each day and several breaks during the school day.
