Tractor Day at a Michigan high school
Chase Harvell drove into the parking lot at Airport High School in Carleton, Michigan. It was Tractor Day, a special day the week before he and his classmates graduated.
On Tractor Day, students do not drive their own cars to school. Some come on tractors. Others come on golf carts and other farm vehicles. The school started this tradition in the 1980s. Most students arrived by 7:30 in the morning. Then they had fun all day. They played games, listened to music, and ate lunch together.
Harvell is a farmer. He and his family grow corn and soybeans. He drove the same tractor that they use on the farm. His big brother drove it to school three years ago, too. "We're just a farm school," Harvell said. "It's a tradition. Everyone's done it before us. We just carry it on."
For the graduating students, Tractor Day is a fun way to say goodbye. It also celebrates the area's long farming history.
