Why is Hollywood mad at Tilly Norwood?
It’s not often that a Hollywood actor’s debut sets off a firestorm, but Tilly Norwood isn’t a typical actor. She’s not even a person, but an artificial intelligence character.
She was created by Xicoia, the AI division of London-based production company Particle6, and officially launched Sept. 27 during the Zurich Film Festival.
Norwood, a brown-haired 20-something with a splash of freckles and girl-next-door looks triggered strong opinions, but the reaction was really about what she represents.
Ever since ChatGPT exploded in popularity, artists have worried that AI will eventually come for their jobs. Norwood may be one of the first of a wave of AI talent putting human actors out of work.
The U.S.’s big actors union said Norwood was made from “the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation.” Emily Blunt called the AI creation “really, really scary.”
But some welcomed the idea that the future will bring an army of AI actors. “Tilly Norwood doesn’t need a hairstylist, has no regrettable posts, and if you wish to see a virgin on-screen, this is one of your better chances,” said economist Tyler Cowen. For film executives, an actor who is no trouble and will never say anything controversial might just be heaven.
AI creators have already started putting Norwood into their videos, with one YouTuber posting a video explaining how to use her in an AI-made movie.
Whatever critics say, the future may be coming at us faster than we like.
