Blue plaque honors British actor Laurence Olivier in London
On June 10, 2026, a blue plaque was placed at 22 Lupus Street in Pimlico, a neighborhood in central London, to honor Laurence Olivier, one of Britain's greatest actors. Actor Ian McKellen unveiled the plaque at the house where Olivier lived from age 6 to 11. As a child, Olivier built a small stage at home using a wooden box and blue curtains, where he sang, danced, and acted for hours.
Olivier became famous for playing Shakespeare's characters in London, including Hamlet and Macbeth. In 1949, he won an Academy Award for best actor for his role in the film "Hamlet." He also campaigned for the creation of the National Theatre, a large performing arts venue in London, and its biggest hall is named after him.
"Actors go out of fashion very quickly," McKellen told the Associated Press, "but I've a feeling that this man's name will never be forgotten."
