Chilean film “La Perra” wins Cannes Palm Dog
Every year, the Cannes Film Festival gives a special prize to the best dog in a movie. This prize is called the Palm Dog Award. In 2026, the winner was "La Perra," a Chilean film. The title means "female dog" in Spanish. The movie follows a lonely woman and her bond with an abandoned puppy named Yuri. Director Dominga Sotomayor rescued two real dogs to play Yuri in the film. "I think both dogs were the heart of the film so I am very happy with this prize," she said. The Grand Jury prize went to Lola, a dog in the British film "I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning." Both top prizes went to films directed by women. The Palm Dog Award started in 2001. It celebrates dogs in films, just like the awards for human actors.
