Even a snake must audition at the Metropolitan Opera
At the Metropolitan Opera, a famous opera house in New York, almost everyone on stage must audition. Even a snake must try out for a role. The snake will appear in a new version of Mozart's opera "Così fan tutte." The story takes place at a 1950s carnival at Coney Island, a fun place by the sea.
Zoe Ziegfeld plays the snake handler in the show. To choose the best one, Ziegfeld held each snake up and looked at it closely. Ziegfeld wanted to check its behavior.
"I need to know that the animal is comfortable with people and with what we are doing," Ziegfeld said.
One snake, a boa constrictor, was chosen for the role. Her name is Princess. She is bigger, and she looks better on stage. Another boa constrictor, Nala, will take Princess's place if needed.
