Ichiro Suzuki smiles after bat breaks on new statue
Ichiro Suzuki smiled when the bat on his new statue broke at the ceremony outside T-Mobile Park in Seattle. The bronze statue shows his famous batting stance, ready to hit. During the ceremony, a broadcaster counted down from 51 — Ichiro's jersey number — and a curtain was pulled off. Everyone heard a cracking sound as the bat broke.
When the bat broke, Ichiro joked through a translator that Mariano Rivera from the New York Yankees had come to break his bat again. Rivera is a famous pitcher who often broke Ichiro's bats in real games.
Ichiro made history as the first Japanese-born player to enter the Hall of Fame, earning 99.7% of the vote from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He said that in the Hall of Fame he was short one vote, and today the bat broke — both were good examples that reminded him he was still not there and still needed to keep going.
