Paris holds its first high-diving competition in the Seine
Paris held its first high-diving competition in the Seine River in August 2026. Athletes jumped from a 20-meter platform in front of the Eiffel Tower. The event was part of the city's effort to bring sport back to its famous river.
But the plan also faced a problem. Organizers stopped training on August 6, after signs of pollution were found in the water. The next day, the French Swimming Federation said the affected area was cleaned. Athletes could then return, and the event went ahead as planned.
Swimming in the Seine was banned in 1923 because of pollution and dangerous boat traffic. It became legal again only in 2025, after Paris spent 1.4 billion euros to clean the river. The 2024 Olympic Games helped speed up this work.
On August 7, hundreds of people gathered along the river to watch the divers. Some stopped during their lunch break, and others found the event by chance.
Maxime Sauvage, the city's deputy mayor for sport, wants Paris to be better for physical activity and sport. He explained that the city is not only a place to visit. It is also a great place to run, play and swim.
