Where does “hat trick” come from?
Lionel Messi scored a hat trick — three goals in one game — at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 17. It was his sixth World Cup. But it was his first hat trick at the tournament. So where does the term "hat trick" actually come from?
The term originally comes from the sport of cricket. In cricket, a wicket means getting a batter out. In 1858, an English player named H.H. Stephenson took three wickets in a row. This was an amazing skill — a real trick. Because of this, people collected money and gave him a hat as a gift. The word "trick" meant his great skill, and "hat" came from the gift he received. That is how the term "hat trick" was born.
Over time, people began using the expression in other sports. In ice hockey, scoring three goals in one game is also called a hat trick. Today, the term is used in many sports around the world. It can also describe three wins in a row.
