Young performers keep Elvis’ music alive in his hometown

Nearly 50 years after Elvis Presley died, young performers are keeping his music alive. In early June 2026, boys and teens aged 7 to 17 sang and danced at the Tupelo Elvis Festival's youth competition in the U.S. state of Mississippi. Tupelo is the singer's hometown.

The performers call themselves tribute artists, not impersonators. They do not pretend to be Elvis but try to recreate his shows for people who never saw him. Some of them became fans after watching the 2022 movie "Elvis."

RJ Hursey, a 14-year-old from Illinois, won the competition. He learned to love Elvis from his grandfather and practices every day. "It makes you feel good because we know that he died thinking he'd be forgotten, and we're just so glad he's still around," Hursey said.

The performers also visited the house where Elvis was born. They saw the church where he first heard gospel music.
