Google Maps adds new AI tools for search and navigation
Google Maps has introduced a major update by incorporating more artificial intelligence (AI) to help people choose where to go and how to get there. This redesign, powered by Google’s Gemini technology, adds two new features to a service used by over 2 billion people worldwide.
One feature called Ask Maps will expand on the conversational abilities that Google brought to the service last November. It enables users to ask questions and get helpful suggestions, such as nearby places to charge their devices, less crowded cafes, or travel plans with several stops. These suggestions are based on a large database of over 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million users. At first, this feature will be available on mobile apps in the U.S. and India.
Another new feature is “Immersive Navigation.” This tool shows a 3D view of the surroundings, including landmarks such as buildings and roads, allowing drivers to better understand their location. It also helps users compare different routes and find convenient parking options. This feature will initially be available only in the U.S. on smartphones and in some cars.
Google has also added its Gemini AI system to products such as Gmail and the Chrome web browser. These developments reflect the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance its services and compete with up-and-coming rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
