5,200 cheeses compete at World Cheese Awards
The World Cheese Awards in Switzerland is a huge event where thousands of cheeses from around the world are tasted and judged — and the first thing people notice is the strong smell.
More than 5,200 cheeses from 46 countries filled one big hall on Nov. 13, creating a mix of odors from mild to extremely stinky. Experts say that even people who think they don’t like cheese can find something they enjoy because there are so many types.
Judges carefully smell, touch, and taste the cheeses without knowing where they are from. They look for good aroma, texture, flavor, and “mouthfeel.” Only the very best earn special awards. This year’s top prize went to a Swiss Gruyere aged for over 18 months. A French creamy cheese came second, followed by another Swiss cheese.
According to experts, even very smelly cheeses can taste amazing once you get past the odor.
