Busan (South Korea)

Busan, on the tip of the Korean Peninsula, is a gem of a city. It’s got amazing markets, unique experiences and cultural wonders.

Start your trip at Jagalchi Market, where fish is sold fresh every day. Jagalchi is the biggest seafood market in the country. Get an eyeful of the variety of the sea’s bounty, then pop into a restaurant for sashimi and spicy seafood soup.

If you’re not in the mood for fish, try out nearby BIFF square for street food like tteokbokki and ssiat hotteok. (That’s rice cakes and grilled pancakes filled with seeds, if you didn’t know.)

But you’re here for more than food. Take an elevator to the observation deck in the 120-meter Busan Tower for a 360-degree view of the city and Busan Port. The tower is in Yongdusan Park, which sits above Busan and can be reached by stairs or escalator.

Next, get yourself to Cheongsapo Daritdol Observatory in Haeundae District. It’s a walkway that looks like a loop extending out over the sea below. Parts of the floor are transparent.

The highlight of any visit should be Geumjeongsan, a mountain in the city. Hiking up to these is a perfect way to spend the day. There are so many spots to point out, but let’s stick with one: the “golden well” at the top of the mountain. This pool of water is said to be home to a golden fish from heaven.

Also on the mountain is Beomeosa Temple, one of the most important Buddhist temples in South Korea. You’ll see Buddhas, stone pagodas and sword-wielding guardians. For lovers of Korean Buddhist architecture, it’s a place you won’t forget.
