Bayeux Tapestry returns to England after almost 1,000 years
The Bayeux Tapestry, a large medieval embroidery depicting a famous battle, is back in England after almost 1,000 years. In a secret operation, workers brought the priceless artwork into the British Museum in London overnight on July 10, 2026. It is on loan from Bayeux, a town in northwest France, and will go on display at the museum from September 10, 2026, until July 2027.
"It's the first time in 1,000 years that such an important piece of British — French too — history is going to be on these shores," said Nicholas Cullinan, the British Museum's director. When it arrived, staff and officials broke into applause.
The museum expects the exhibition to be one of the most popular in its history. About 100,000 tickets were sold on the first day they went on sale, in July 2026.
Made of wool thread sewn onto linen cloth, the artwork shows events before the Battle of Hastings in October 1066. In that battle, William, the duke of Normandy in France, defeated King Harold's army and became the first Norman king of England.
The tapestry symbolizes close ties between France and Britain. French President Emmanuel Macron offered the loan during a state visit to the U.K. in July 2025. In return, the British Museum will lend treasures from Sutton Hoo, an ancient burial site, to museums in Normandy.
