How the ice cream cone began
For a long time, serving ice cream was not easy. Sellers needed a good way to give it to their customers.
In 1904, there was a big fair in St. Louis, a city in the American state of Missouri. There, an immigrant named Ernest Hamwi sold a crisp, fried pastry called zalabiyeh. He came from Syria, a country in the Middle East. He was only 20 years old.
Next to him, a man named Albert Aboussie sold ice cream in paper cups. He was born in Lebanon. One day, he had no more cups, so Hamwi had an idea.
He rolled his pastry into the shape of a cone. Aboussie served his ice cream in it. People loved it. Some people say this was the first ice cream cone.
