Ikebana, Japan’s ancient flower art, offers calm in a busy world

Ikebana, the Japanese art of arranging flowers, dates back more than 500 years, yet it remains quietly popular. Today it attracts not only traditionalists but also newcomers who find its mix of creativity and mindfulness restorative. In some ways, the practice is like solving a puzzle — but one with no fixed answer, since every flower, and every person, is different.

Hiroyuki Okada began studying ikebana around 2019. He now teaches Ikenobo, the oldest of three major schools. Many people today, he believes, are drawn to the art while searching for joy, purpose, or relief from the pressures of modern life. Okada says that as you work with living flowers, you also discover what lies within you. "You come face to face with yourself," he said.

For many practitioners, the appeal is deeply calming. Beyond a flower's beauty and scent, Okada notes that the feel of its petals and leaves matters, much like petting a kitten or a puppy. Research has also shown that flowers and their scents make people happier. Mayu Shimizu, who has studied with Okada since around 2023, compares the effect to yoga or meditation. "My mind feels clearer," she said.

Freer styles, which look like casual Western bouquets, may feel easier and more fun for beginners than stricter traditional forms. In the end, those who practice ikebana say it connects people to the flowers and to one another across generations.
