Mail by boat in a German village
Andrea Bunar waited for spring for many months. On April 29, 2026, she went back to delivering mail by boat after the long winter break. Bunar is a postal worker in Lehde, Germany, and has done this job for 14 years. In winter, she brings mail by car, but icy roads make the work slow. From April to October, she takes letters and packages to houses by the river from Monday to Saturday. Lehde is the only place in Germany where mail is delivered by boat, and this tradition has continued for 129 years. Every week, Bunar delivers around 600 letters and 80 packages. Recently, she has been delivering fewer letters and more packages. "I already delivered an e-scooter, a lawnmower, and a fridge — sometimes my barge feels like a little container ship," she said with a laugh. "This is and has been my dream job all along," Bunar said with a smile.
